Giving Back All Year Long

The SC Legal Community Gives Back

We are now in what is often called the season of giving.  It’s the time of year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve when we are reminded to give to those less fortunate than ourselves.  However, South Carolina’s legal community, including CompuScripts Court Reporters, is dedicated to giving back all year long.

SC Lawyers

The South Carolina Bar Association (SCBA) serves as an example of giving back all year long.  This is demonstrated by its commitment to service to those who are unable to afford representation.  This is done most notably through its member attorneys’ participation in the Pro Bono Program.  Volunteer attorneys provide professional services at no fee or reduced fees to charitable groups or individuals of limited means throughout the state.  And through the South Carolina Bar Foundation, the SCBA has awarded more than $50 million to law-related organizations in our state.  Grantees have included the SC Center for Fathers & Families, the SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center, and YMCA Youth in Government.

The Young Lawyers Division of the SCBA is also devoted to giving back all year long.  Its Backpack Drive collects backpacks and school supplies for students in need across the state.  The Cinderella Project transforms gently worn formalwear into a prom “shop” for high school students.  And the Families Forever projects raises awareness about adoption and foster care in our state.

Not to be outdone by their junior peers, the Senior Lawyers Division of the SCBA also practices giving back all year long.  SC Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts provides legal assistance to the arts community in our state, and My Will Program provides simple wills to low-income senior citizens.

SC Paralegals and Legal Assistants

Legal staff in South Carolina also practice giving back all year long.  The Pro Bono Committee of the South Carolina Upstate Paralegal Association (SCUPA) has participated in events such as Wills for Heroes, providing free estate planning documents for first responders.  SCUPA has also made contributions to organizations such as A Child’s Haven, Let There Be Mom, and Safe Harbor.

In the Midlands, the Palmetto Paralegal Association (PPA) is giving back all year long.  In its 32-year history, the PPA has donated Easter baskets to a local children’s home, adopted families during the Families Helping Families drive, and supported the Prisma Health Breast Center.  PPA volunteers have worked as election poll workers and assisted SC Bar members at their Wills Clinics.

The Legal Staff Professionals of the Midlands (LSPM) is another Columbia-area organization giving back all year long.   LSPM members deliver cards and goodies to Finlay House, a local senior residence.  Members supports the SC Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault through monetary and in-kind donations.  The organization also supports Hannah House, a transitional shelter for women seeking independence and self-sufficiency.  This year, members decorated Hannah House for Christmas and donated money and items from the organization’s wish list.

And in the Lowcountry, the Charleston Association of Legal Assistants is also giving back all year long.  CALA members have held annual food drives and made monetary donations to the Lowcountry Food Bank.  Members hold an annual Toys for Tots party.  CALA also supports HALOS, a group dedicated to supporting kinship families.  Kinship families are those led by adults raising children who are not their own to keep them out of foster care with strangers.

SC Court Reporters

CompuScripts has been giving back all year long since we first opened in 1993.  We support organizations such as Harvest Hope Food Bank, Heartworks Ministry, The Oliver Gospel Mission, and Pets Inc.  CompuScripts staff have participated in Bark to the Park, a fundraising event helping homeless pets in the Midlands.  Our staff recently collected pantry items for Sharing God’s Love, an organization dedicated to helping families in crisis.  For two months each year, CompuScripts sponsors Words Into Action, our program of charitable giving that lets our clients direct our donations to vetted non-profit organizations.  And we also like to play Santa during December as we drop in on clients to deliver goodies!

Please contact CompuScripts if you would like to learn about our court reporting and videography services, our mix-and-match deposition options, or our programs of charitable giving.
